The League of Women Voters Eden Area (LWVEA) will be holding a free program on “Women’s History in the Eden Area” on Monday, March 21, 2022, at 7pm over Zoom. The Eden Area includes Castro Valley, Hayward, San Leandro, and San Lorenzo.
March is designated as Women’s History Month. The question arises as to why and how did this come about. Our guest speaker is Molly Murphy MacGregor, who worked to establish a month dedicated to Women's History. Ms. MacGregor is the cofounder of the National Women’s History Project, now called National Women’s History Alliance.
The 19th Amendment establised a woman's right to vote in the Unites States in 1920. In 1908 Alameda County women marched in Oakland to request that the California Republican Convention party's platform support women's suffrage, but they were turned down. Finally, in 1911 California women gained that right to vote. Along with the history of women’s suffrage in California, the program will also highlight women leaders in the Eden Area.
